About GRBNAThe Grand Rapids Chapter National Black Nurses Association (GRBNA) was established in 1998 and chartered in 1999 under the leadership of Joyce Durr, Denise Turner and Sharon Zinnali. It was formed to address the need for structure, organization, stronger sense of community and broader networks in the Black Community. Joyce Durr attended the annual conference of The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) and felt that the community of Grand Rapids would benefit from an organized group that would help promote and educate the health needs and interests of the community.
As a chapter of NBNA, GRBNA implements our national mission on a local level: “to provide a forum for collective action by African American nurses to represent and provide a forum for black nurses to advocate for and implement strategies to ensure access to the highest quality of healthcare for persons of color.” (National Black Nurses Association, n.d.) GRBNA uses education as a strategy to effectively fulfill the mission of the national organization on a local level. GRBNA partners with local organizations and providers, providing Health and Wellness seminars, resources, workshops, scholarships, mentors and many other educational services to address health care disparity in communities of color. GRBNA membership is comprised of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and nursing students with various levels of educational attainments. Our membership promotes the advancement of professionalism through providing resources that help communities of color pursue their health, education and career goals. .
