The Body You Save May Be Your Own
The Grand Rapids Chapter National Black Nurses Association (GRBNA) was established in 1998 and chartered in 1999 under the leadership of Joyce Durr, Denise Turner and Sharon Zinnali. It was formed to address the need for structure, organization, stronger sense of community and broader networks in the Black Community.
OUR HISTORY
Joyce Durr attended the annual conference of The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) and felt that the community of Grand Rapids would benefit from an organized group that would help promote and educate the health needs and interests of the community.
As a chapter of NBNA, GRBNA implements our national mission on a local level: “to provide a forum for collective action by African American nurses to represent and provide a forum for black nurses to advocate for and implement strategies to ensure access to the highest quality of healthcare for persons of color.” (National Black Nurses Association, n.d.)
GRBNA uses education as a strategy to effectively fulfill the mission of the national organization on a local level. GRBNA partners with local organizations and providers, providing Health and Wellness seminars, resources, workshops, scholarships, mentors and many other educational services to address health care disparity in communities of color.
GRBNA membership is comprised of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and nursing students with various levels of educational attainments. Our membership promotes the advancement of professionalism through providing resources that help communities of color pursue their health, education and career goals.

IDEAS Nurse Mentorship and Scholarship Program
If you are a minority nursing student entering the final two semesters of an accredited registered nurse program and are interested in entering the hospital workforce, we encourage you to apply. This scholarship seeks to prepare students that are not licensed as a registered nurse for entering the nursing workforce. The selected students will receive $2,500.00 each term for the final 1-2 terms of an accredited registered nurse program: for a potential total of $5,000.
The recipients will also participate in a mentorship program to promote professional development and nurse retention in the hospital setting.
The IDEAS scholarship and Mentorship Program addresses Diversity Equity and Inclusion by integrating equitable opportunities to minority students to develop professional careers as nurses in the hospital setting. It helps to change the socioeconomic impact of minority nurses on their community, and it has the potential to improve the quality of life of its participants.
ABOUT THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
This program will provide pre-employment and post-employment mentorship to encourage hospital employment and promote nurse retention in the hospital setting. The selected students will be provided professional development coaching and encouragement to increase their confidence as they prepare to enter the workforce.
Scholarship and mentorship will be the modalities to lead student nurses into professional nursing careers in the hospital setting and empower them with leadership skills and advocacy for minorities to enter the hospital workforce. A diverse workplace environment is the desired outcome, which will provide increased opportunities for minority representation in sustainable professional roles in the hospital setting.
